Subject: BENS crush ANANDA by 5 wickets
St. Benedict’s College trounced Ananda College by 5 wickets with 4.1 overs to spare in the under 19 Schools 50 overs cricket tournament at Kotahena today. (18th March 2013)
Ananda, taking first lease of the wicket were all out for 208 in 49.5 overs with Mahela Jayalath, Yohan Soyza and Geethika Jayatilleke doing the damage for the Bens. In reply, St. Benedict’s got off to a horrible start, wobbling at 8 runs for 3 wickets at one stage, but a gallant 153 runs stand for the 4th wicket between Sameera Sandamal (90 not out) and Vice-captain Madura Madushanka (84) took the game away from Ananda.
St. Benedict’s College qualified to play in the 50 overs tournament this year after a very successful season being unbeaten, a feat achieved after a laps of 14 years when they were last unbeaten way back in 1999. Their remarkable performance this year empowered the team to become group champions, a feat never achieved in the recent past.
Incidentally, St. Benedict’s College competing in the Division One tournament organized by Sri Lanka schools Cricket Association this year, beat St. Anne’s College – Kurunagela, Moratu MV and Wesley College outright while also beating the much fancied schools, such as St. Thomas’ College – Mt, Royal College, Ananda College, St. Peter’s College, St. Anthony’s College – Kandy, Issipathana MV and St. Sebastian’s College Moratuwa on first innings.
St. Benedict’s College will play their next match against Dharmaloka MV on Wednesday, 20th March 2013 at Kotahena and we wish the team good luck for the rest of the tournament.
Our heartfelt congratulations to the team, led by Dilan Angelo Ratnasinghe, Coach Mr. N.I.C. Silva, M.I.C. / P.O.G. Mr. Vivian Saverymuthapulle and the tremendous support rendered by the Cricket Wing and not forgetting the leadership rendered by Rev. Bro. Janaka Fonseka and Sports Coordinator, Rev. Bro. Praveen Vaz.
